List of Attorneys

If you are a retractor or affected family member who is considering legal action against an irreponsible therapist, the False Memory Syndrome Foundation maintains an extensive attorney information list for its members who have questions about legal matters involving recovered memories. However, if you can't find an attorney by those means, here is a list of attorneys known to work in this area.

www.StopBadTherapy.com makes absolutely no representations regarding the competence, training, licensing status, or professionalism of the attorneys on this list. We cannot make and have not made any effort to confirm this information. We recommend that you call the state bar association to confirm an attorney's licensing status. If you're unsure about how to go about choosing an attorney, the state bar association may be able to provide you with information.

It is imporant to realize that very, very few attorneys have experience in this highly specialized area. The following questions are recommended to help you avoid the dangers posed by inexperienced attorneys.

  1. Have you conducted a _______ case before?
    1. false memory syndrome
    2. defended against a "repressed memory" allegation
    3. psychiatric malpractice
  2. What is your record in such cases?
  3. Can you send me news articles or other media sources referencing your work?
  4. Have you won any jury verdicts in psychotherapy negligence suits?
    1. How many?
    2. Largest verdict?
  5. Do you regularly work with experts in the mental health field? Who are they? Are they faculty members at major universities and/or medical schools?
In general, do not seek help from an attorney who is in a different state than the one in which you would like to take legal action or file a complaint. Laws vary from state to state; in general, attorneys can only practice in the state or states in which they are licensed by the state bar association. (Sometimes they can participate in cases in other states as consultants or by associating with local counsel.) In the below list, attorneys are listed under their primary state of residence or practice; they may be cross-listed in other states in which they have participated in cases in the past.
